Questions about checking a car’s history

We do not create vehicle history data — we license it and compile it. US accident, salvage and title records come from feeds backed by NMVTIS, the American national title system. Nigerian customs, registration and police records come through local verification partners. Every report lists exactly which source answered and which did not.

The VIN is the seventeen-character serial number unique to one vehicle. On most cars it is stamped on a plate where the dashboard meets the windscreen on the driver’s side, and printed on a sticker in the driver’s door jamb. It also appears on the customs papers and the vehicle licence. Read it off the car itself rather than off a document the seller hands you.

No. We check against the VIN, because the plate can be changed, transferred or cloned while the VIN is stamped into the vehicle. If the plate and the VIN tell different stories about the same car, that discrepancy is itself the finding worth having.

That is one of the six checks, and it is the one no foreign report covers. A car with unpaid or falsified duty can be seized long after you have paid for it, and the liability follows the vehicle rather than the person who imported it.

You see the disagreement. Two databases will happily report different mileage, or a different model year, for the same VIN. We show the most authoritative answer and keep the conflicting one visible — because a mismatch on make, model or year can indicate a cloned or re-stamped VIN, and that is worth more to you than a tidy-looking report.

Yes. Every report downloads as a PDF you can forward, and findings are ranked by how much they should affect your decision rather than dumped in date order. A documented accident or a rolled-back odometer is a concrete number to negotiate against.
